Capitalism and Democracy at Odds

GreaterDemocracy.org supports the argument made by John Gray that capitalism is a threat to democracy. Jock Gill points us to a quote from Benjamin Barber:

Capitalism has put democracy in trouble, because capitalism has tried to persuade us that being a private consumer is enough. That a citizen is nothing more than a consumer. [Benjamin Barber, Consumed: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole, New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2007]

Being a consumer is not enough. We must speak up, vote, run for office, raise hell. That's the role our Founding Fathers saw for us

BAH! I have been preaching this for years. "Consume Citizen!"? That's my quotable quote, I tell, nay, command my fellow citizens to consume....I just never got around to doing any hard research...or writing a book...because I was BUYING books, yeah yeah, that's the ticket.

But seriously, we need to stop buying junk. The Veruca Salt complex coupled with phantom buying power (PAYDAY LOAN/TITLE LOAN/CREDIT CARDS BAD!) leads to more debt and more poverty and a weird sense of entitlement.
